The new purpose-built, female-led studio is being fronted by Sarah Smith, Elisabeth Murdoch and Julie Lockhart, pictured left to right. “I’m here because of the amazing women I’m supporting tonight,” Blanchett told The Londoner. “Julie and Sarah have been leading for so long and them linking up with the likes of Liz is not only exciting for audiences but the industry. It’s time we saw women in these positions.”

Who knows, we might be seeing Cate in one of Locksmith’s forthcoming movies. “I’m a huge fan,” she said. “I remember the first time I saw an animation by Disney it blew my mind.”

UK Animation Firm Locksmith Opens London Complex

Locksmith Launches London studios

Picture
The 5,000 square-foot Primrose Hill studio, which is spread across three floors, will be home to 70 artists, staff and crew and is the first dedicated CG-feature studio of its kind in the UK. Locksmith is in part backed by UK post-production firm Double Negative (Godzilla) and has a multi-year deal with Twentieth Century Fox for U.S. and global distribution. The company wants to deliver one movie every 12 – 18 months.
The firm is currently in production on their first feature Ron’s Gone Wrong, which will tell the story of a walking, talking, digitally connected bot that sweeps the world becoming every kid’s new best friend. When an eleven-year-old boy ends up with one that doesn’t work, however, he must try to teach it. The film is due for release November

Locksmith Animation’s Co-CEO’s Sarah Smith and Julie Lockhart said, “The studio gives a home to Locksmith’s high-flying ambition to create a major new strand of CG animated movies here in London.  It’s a wonderful building – but it’s the artists it houses that are our greatest assets. We hope it will add to the appeal of London as a world-class destination for the best animation talent working today.” Elisabeth Murdoch is co-founder and chairman of the company.

New animation studio opens in London

“The next global animation powerhouse”

Picture
An animation studio aimed at being “the next global animation powerhouse” has opened its doors in London.Locksmith Animation’s new studio facility will be the first dedicated high-end computer generated feature animation studio in the UK.
Founded by producer and director Sarah Smith and producer Julie Lockhart, alongside Elisabeth Murdoch, the studio hopes to be a UK contemporary for US giants Disney-Pixar and DreamWorks.
It will be a pipeline for features that go into digital production at visual effects facility Double Negative, which is also based in London.
Speaking at a launch party at the studio attended by Cate Blanchett, Murdoch said: “We have actually been on this creative journey for quite a few years now and it really started with conversations on my sitting room floor with Sarah because we were getting really enthusiastic about the possibilities and the opportunity of creating the next global animation powerhouse right here in the UK.
Smith added: “We started with a ridiculous ambition, which was why don’t we have Disney-Pixar or Dreamworks in this country, we can do that here, and luckily enough we found Liz, who believed that was a possibility.”
Comparing Locksmith’s Primrose Hill studio to those of the big companies, she said: “By comparison this is relatively modest but nonetheless we can achieve films of that calibre, partly because of the might of Double Negative, who are possibly the best visual effects company in the world right now, producing amazing high quality imagery. The other is our talent and passion and vision.”

The company has recruited animators who have worked on films including Oscar-winner Coco, The Incredibles, Happy Feet, Inside Out and The Lego Movie.
